Under Pressure

Under Pressure

‘Under Pressure’ (the David Bowie and Queen version) is probably one of my all-time favourite songs. If it were a movie I’d give it 10 pumpkins. It’s perfect.

It’s perfect for describing how I’ve felt in the lead-up to my 30th birthday. Not content with just sliding into a new decade like most folk, I decided it would be more appropriate to skydive into my thirties with a whole list of youthful challenges completed.

Of course, as the big day drew closer so did the Top 30 Challenge deadline…

Challenge number 28 on the Top 30 Countdown dared me to ‘Spend a week’s wage on a night out‘.

That’s my kind of “challenge”!

I umm’d and ahh’d about this one for pretty much the entire year. Should I gamble it all away on a single spin of the roulette wheel? Should I rent a stretch Hummer and drive around Sydney sipping champagne and lording it all over everyone? I even briefly considered an international trip, but thought better of it when I checked out my rather grim looking annual leave balance.

In the end I decided that the best way to blow a week’s wage would be to spend it all celebrating with my closest friends and family – so, last night, that’s exactly what I did!

… but not before running around Sydney dressed in a police outfit inviting strangers to dance ‘Gangnam Style’ for the camera…

Sure, there might still be 4 days left of the Top 30 Countdown challenge, but I’m calling this one early.

I will NOT be completing challenge number 16, ‘Court-side tickets at Madison Square Garden‘.

There’s a hole in my bucket list

There’s a hole in my bucket list

Last night over a delicious dinner of epic fried Chinese proportions, I mused with my darling fiancé, Andy, about the ‘Top 30 Countdown’ list and all the fun (and prizes!) it has brought us so far.

In my appearance on The Price is Right last Wednesday, I described the list as a “bucket list”. In some ways it is a list of things to do before I kick the bucket but, really, “bucket list” implies so much more. After all, this list was not created by me, it was created by 30 inspirational friends and family, so most of the challenges would have gone unmet had I been left to my own devices until my ultimate demise.

It got me to thinking about what my real bucket list would look like. What do I desperately want to get done before I run down the curtain and join the choir (of the tone-deaf) invisible?

Happy Birthday to me!

This whole blog, all for me?! I shouldn’t have!

I wouldn’t have either… but it’s on the list! Item number 6 in fact. Here I am, ticking off the very first item on my list of “30 things to try before I’m 30”. There it is: “6. Start a blog”.

Tick!

(Thanks for the suggestion Juliette!)

Although, if i’m being entirely honest, I did start a blog once before… Emphasis on the word start. It was in 2010 and consisted of exactly two posts that, until now, have never seen the light of day ‘Supermarket Sweep‘ and ‘Talent Time‘… and now you know why.

When I asked 30 of my most inspirational and creative friends and family to help me come up with a list of “30 things to try before I’m 30”, I probably should have considered that not all of them would use their powers for good. In fact, some of them seemed to relish the opportunity to watch me squirm (I’m looking at you Dane – and don’t think I didn’t notice you chuckling to yourself Tracey!)

Indeed, I may have bitten off more than I can chew. But, then again, you know what they say about eating an elephant… And here I am taking it one bite at a time. Wait, what? Eating an elephant? That’s not on the list is it?!

Checking….

Phew! That was close!

Hey, by the time I hit 30, who knows? I may have even managed to swallow the whole damn thing. Don’t worry though, I plan to leave plenty of room for birthday cake!

On that note, there is a particularly appetising piece of birthday cake here with my name literally written all over it, so I’d better get going. I hope you will enjoy reading about my third life crisis as much as I enjoy living it.

Let the countdown begin!
