Television, I hereby promise to never leave you again

Television, I hereby promise to never leave you again

After two full months of television avoidance I can now say that I am officially back on the juice!

My 1-year-old nephew helped me break the drought yesterday morning when he was chewing on the remote and accidentally turned on the TV. Upon the realisation that I could (finally) watch TV again, I came rushing to the lounge – toy zebra in arms  and eyes glued to the screen.

TV Time

They were showing ‘Family Ties’, which seemed rather apt.

Lisa: Maggie, come to the one you love best…

Today marks the halfway point in my ‘No TV Challenge‘. Although the challenge, set by my dastardly friend Tracey, offered me the option of splitting it into two single months rather than one long, consecutive stretch, I want to get this baby over and done with!

My old favourite, Neighbours, started back this week and of course I wasn’t there to see it. Thankfully, due to the joys of that other time-sucker (the Internet) I have a pretty good idea of what’s going on. Nevertheless, I do feel more than slightly compelled to break my TV ban – just for the day – to catch up on the Ramsay street antics.

But I won’t.

No, I shall remain strong.

Wonka No TV

Are you surprised that I’ve managed to last this long without TV? I find it completely out of character that I’ve barely even complained! (At least, compared to my usual level of complaining). Perhaps I didn’t love television so much after all…

Merry Christmas ya filthy animal

Today is the first day of the rest of my life… but it’s also the first day I give up TV for 2 months! (List item number 14, courtesy of my bff, Tracey).

In fact, I tried to start the challenge yesterday, but forgot, and accidentally ended up watching The Morning Show (my loyalty to Larry Emdur shall henceforth never waiver). It included a very engaging piece on “Extreme Cougars” (and not the four-legged kind either). It was both disturbing and enthralling.

But that’s TV!

Of course, I was still reeling from missing the final episode of Neighbours for the year. I had my whole evening planned out and then my equally fanatical Neighbours fan of a friend’s tyre exploded in protest and I was stranded in Milsons Point.

Bummer.

Trick or treating with our favourite neighbours

Trick or treating with our favourite neighbours

It’s Halloween.

I know this because on our run this afternoon we came across at least 5 different groups of trick or treaters trawling the streets for lollies (and cavities).

As we walked off the burn of the leisurely 2.5km amble, we got to thinking “What the heck is Halloween about anyway?” It’s the kind of thing you feel like you should know, but have never bothered to find out. Andy figured it was a Pagan thing. I felt like it had something to do with the Christian ‘All Saints Day’.

So, as today’s community service I thought I’d Google it on behalf of all the ignorant Aussies out there…

Everybody needs good Neighbours

A couple of months ago, one of my oldest and dearest friends, Tracey, provided a detailed explanation of why she thinks I should go without TV for 2 months as one of my ‘Top 30 things to try before I’m 30’. Let’s just say it was a less than glowing report of my addiction to the idiot box. Specifically, my addiction to the long-running soapie, Australia’s beloved ‘Neighbours’.

Let’s ignore the fact that Neighbours is the longest running drama series in Australian television. Never mind that it’s nearly as old as I am, launching in 1985. Forget that it was at one time the most popular daytime television show in the UK (besides news bulletins). No, I must be the crazy one for enjoying it.

To be fair, it may be taking it one step to far to help the characters name their babies via posts on the ‘Neighbours’ Facebook wall… but they’re like family to me! I’ve even gone so far as to cast members of my family as various characters on the show, so now when something terrible happens to Karl it’s like it’s happening to my Dad, or when Lucas stacks his motorbike it’s Andy that’s taken a tumble, or when Toadie and Sonya have a fight it’s my older brother and his wife that are on the brink of despair.

Considering how much drama is packed into each nightly episode, you can begin to understand how it could quickly become a source of intense emotional distress for me.

Guest Post: 2 months with no TV makes Amanda… something, something

By Tracey

Amanda recently asked me to write a guest post for her blog and by recently, I mean 3 weeks ago. Hi, my name is Tracey and I’m lazy.

I met Amanda when I was 14, so we have been friends for ‘a while’ now. Sure, I’m not as old as her but our age difference has never challenged our friendship. I clearly remember the first time I met Amanda, it was in year 8 Religion when she made a wildly inappropriate joke and then continued to argue with Miss Mushroom Haircut about the validity of the joke. I laughed so loud (‘lol’ for the young folks) and long that we both ended up in serious trouble. I knew immediately that this was the kind of influence I wanted to have through my important and formative high school years.
