Guest Post: Postulations of a Tortured Soul

Authors Note: The following article contains liberal doses (dollops, even) of sarcasm. Please proceed with your tongue firmly implanted into your cheek.

I must confess, I am disappointed.

No, my friends, not the utter disappointment that arises when the Blues lose the State of Origin again, or when Steph returns and creates havoc on Ramsay Street and causes pain in the lives of your favourite peeps. No, this is just a mild feeling…

Of let-downedness…

No Fridge Challenge Day 6: Eating is cheating

Apologies for the late post, I was otherwise occupied last night.

Ok, if you must know, I was out “having the night of my life with HANSON!”

Hanson

“When you get old and start losing your hair, the girls of Sydney will still care”.

One of my oldest and dearest friends, Rachael, is a mad Hanson fan (and yes, I intentionally used the word “is” rather than “was”). Rachael attended the concert the night before, managing to impressively tick off the absolute ultimate of all of her bucket list items by actually meeting them.

*Insert incoherent squeal here*

With other people’s bucket list items being ticked of left and right, it is with renewed vigour that I return to my own list

Songs to wheeze to: My exercise playlist

Songs to wheeze to: My exercise playlist

One thing I’m finding as I (figuratively) race towards that half-marathon finish line is that music really helps to get my motor runnin’.

Initially, when I started training for the half marathon (kindly added to the list by my little brother, Dane), I went without the old iPod. The only sounds that could be heard were the slapping of my feet against the footpath and the wheezing gasps for air as I hit each hill. Sometimes I even managed to cough out a brief “Kill me.” to Andy, but apart from that it was basically silent.

I’ve never been a huge music fan (my friends will tell you I’ve pulled out of more concerts than Nicki Minaj) but it definitely helps to make a long run seem shorter and a wheeze fade into a quiet huff and/or puff.

I have a separate playlist, cleverly entitled ‘Exercise songs’, which I now take with me each time we run. Since I’m usually too puffed to say much to Andy anyway, it’s not really as anti-social as it sounds.

I know a few of you have exercise goals of your own so I thought I’d share some of my favourites from the playlist – perhaps they’ll come in handy to you too?

The Music Man(da)

The Music Man(da)

List item number 21, submitted by my cousin Mitch, requires that I learn how to play a musical instrument. Holy Bon Jovis! My family don’t do things by halves do they?

You can probably guess that I don’t already have some secret musical talent hidden away. I’ve never learned more than the recorder… unless you count my acoustic guitar repertoire, which consists of the ‘Inspector Gadget’ theme and ‘Suicide is Painless’ (AKA the ‘Mash’ theme), both of which I taught myself using tabs, and neither of which I remember in their entirety.

About a year and a half ago I got SUPER bored and decided I would give singing lessons a whirl. I’d noticed a little flyer taped to a telegraph pole and I thought it might be a laugh. Turns out it’s a massive laugh – usually at my expense – but I still love it! I’ve been going on and off since then and I can definitely hear an improvement. Nevertheless, I still wouldn’t dare assault anyone’s ears with it (apart from my singing teacher who gets paid for the privilege).
