Guest Post: The List – a Halftime Report

By Andy S.

When Amanda first mentioned she was doing “The List” I was so happy for her. I believe life’s there to be lived to the fullest and having a tick off list with a deadline is the best way to motivate yourself into getting out there and trying something new.

Speaking of trying something new, this is my first ever blog post and to be honest it’s not as easy as Amanda makes it look! As I’m sure you’re aware by now, Amanda’s an amazing writer and loves sharing her thoughts and feelings with the world. In many ways I’m the complete opposite in those regards – but I’ll give it my best shot.

That’s the end of that chapter!

That’s the end of that chapter!

Eleanor Roosevelt once said “Do one thing every day that scares you”.

Today, for me, that one thing was starting my book!

Yes, I finally put key to board and wrote the first words of what will become my answer to third life crisis challenge number 24, ‘Write a book’.

On Saturday morning, Andy and I rose early to tick off list item number 4, ‘Catch a flight somewhere random at the last minute with just your handbag and a credit card‘.

As promised, we arrived at the airport with little more than the clothes on our backs. The conversation with the taxi driver went a little something like this:

Taxi Man: So, which terminal?
Me: I don’t know!
Taxi Man: I mean, which airline?
Me: I don’t know that either! We haven’t decided where we’re going yet!
Taxi Man:(disinterestedly) So, Terminal 2?
Me: I guess!

So… where on Earth did we end up?

Tomorrow, Andy and I will tackle list item number 4, ‘Catch a flight somewhere random at the last minute with just your handbag and a credit card‘. It was Andy’s birthday on Monday, so this is his birthday gift from me and, indirectly, from my Mum, who set me the challenge. Whether it is a great gift… or Canberra… remains to be seen.

I should point out that I don’t have a problem with Canberra. We visited there once when I’d won a hotel stay and we couldn’t afford a flight. We visited Cockington Green (a miniaturists wonderland) and even a winery. We had a good time. Thing is, I’m seeking adventure this time, and a brief flight into the ACT just isn’t going to cut it.

Nothing comes close to the golden coast

You could travel the world
But nothing comes close
To the golden coast
Once you party with us
You’ll be falling in love
Oooooh Oh Oooooh

I have had quite a week and nothing sums it up better than these lyrics from Katy Perry’s ‘California Gurls’.

On Wednesday I flew into Coolangatta Airport on the sunny Gold Coast, ready and rearing to take on the eleventh challenge from my list of ’30 things to try before I’m 30′, number 7: Swim with a Dolphin.

There’s a hole in my bucket list

There’s a hole in my bucket list

Last night over a delicious dinner of epic fried Chinese proportions, I mused with my darling fiancé, Andy, about the ‘Top 30 Countdown’ list and all the fun (and prizes!) it has brought us so far.

In my appearance on The Price is Right last Wednesday, I described the list as a “bucket list”. In some ways it is a list of things to do before I kick the bucket but, really, “bucket list” implies so much more. After all, this list was not created by me, it was created by 30 inspirational friends and family, so most of the challenges would have gone unmet had I been left to my own devices until my ultimate demise.

It got me to thinking about what my real bucket list would look like. What do I desperately want to get done before I run down the curtain and join the choir (of the tone-deaf) invisible?
